What Is Depression?
If you’ve been asking yourself “what is depression” and you want to know everything about it, you have come to the right place.
People, from all over the world, from all countries and cultures, sometimes feel “down”.
Both men and women sometimes feel they don’t have enough energy to go through the next day, especially after loosing a close loved one or after experiencing disappointment or frustration.
What is depression? Are symptoms of sadness and constant fatigue enough to diagnose depression?
Depression is not just a feeling of being ”down” or tired. It’s not enough to have a low level of energy and even if there is a tragic event in the background, it is still not enough to dictate a depression.
So, what is depression?
In order To try and answer the question here is a case study:
What is depression: case study:
Jennet, 45, mother of 3 from Boston, Mass:
“What is depression, you ask?
well, I was doing great! I was married to a great man, we had 3 wonderful kids, I’ve had just started a new job for a large firm and had just bought a nice house by the lake.
Well, you ask “what is depression”? I’ll tell you. Instead of jumping up and down I was miserable. At first my husband asked me why I was sad all the time, and indeed I was. I was sad and lonely, so lonely. After a while I couldn’t take it any more!!! It made me very angry and agitated, I suffered anger attacks followed by anxiety attacks. Of course it made our family life a living hell. I began having problems with my husband. I didn’t like anything about me; I wished I could just disappear!!!
I began spending all day in bad, since I did have any sleep the night before. Finally, I lost my job. They fired me, but who can blame them?
By that time I also dropped all my hobbies. Even taking care of my children was a difficult task for me. At that point my mother came for a visit (she lives in Vermont). Two minutes after she saw me, she realized I had a problem. She said I looked as if I lost any sense of joy and happiness.I was just not her little happy girl anymore. She literally dragged me to the doctor’s office (me, a doctor?! now way!!).
Lucky me!!! Thanks to my mother and of course my doctors, after a few weeks I began to feel better (my mom stayed with me the all time). I was diagnosed with depression (only than did my mother tell me that my grandfather was diagnosed with depression many years before).
I was treated with psychotherapy once a week. My psychotherapist put me back on my feet again. He helped me control my new situation without having to go through hell again.”
