Severe Depression

It is almost impossible to escape feeling sad and depressed from time to time during a course of a lifetime. However, when sadness becomes an inseparable part of everyday life, accompanied with feelings of loneliness and hopelessness, loss of appetite and lack of energy, it might be due to depression and in more serious situations due to severe depression.

There are several types of depression, and just as the name suggests, severe depression is the most serious one. When talking about severe depression, we don’t just mean the “blues” one might feel as a result of frustration or disappointment. This is perfectly normal. Severe depression affects every day life, leading to hopeless feelings and even loss of desire to live altogether. Severe depression affects patient’s ability to work, study, sleep, eat and lead a normal life. The patient will lose his appetite, feel a constant lack of energy and ability to enjoy any activity that he used to enjoy in the past. He might lose desire to communicate with his family and friends and feel constant desire to sleep.

 

Who might suffer sever depression:

  1. People that are going through a stressful and traumatizing period in life might develop sever depression.

  2. People who suffered childhood trauma or abuse might also develop sever depression.

  3. People who suffer a terminal illness such as cancer or HIV and constantly feel increased chronic pain.

  4. People with a family history of severe depression are more likely to develop severe depression than the average population. 

    Symptoms of severe depression:

  1. Feelings of sadness, loneliness and self-worthless over a prolonged period of time.

  2. Loss of appetite followed by excessive changes in weight might indicate a severe depression.

  3. Difficulties in falling asleep or constant desire to sleep is another symptom of severe depression.

  4. Another symptom of severe depression is lack of ability to concentrate and loss of memory.

  5. Loss of ability to enjoy activities, that were once enjoyable or lack of ability to perform those activities.

  6. A definat symptom of severe depression is having thoughts of suicide or even having specific suicidal plans. If this is the case one should report to the doctor as soon as possible.

 

Severe depression is a life threatening situation when not treated, since many patients suffer thoughts of worthlessness and often plan to kill themselves. Many severe depression patients often feel they can’t go on living life of pain and misery and feel that suicide might be the easiest way out of their severe depression.

Those patients usually send their environments warning massages which are actually a cry for help. If any of you friends or family members who suffer severe depression and expresses any thought of suicide, you should take it as serious as possible and seek professional help immediately.
